A selection of stakeholder engagement and supply chain case studies
These case studies were developed with clients to support their capacity building programs and the development of new low carbon products and processes. These case studes help to build capacity and support change strategies by extending knowledge about  engagements and investigations to a wider audience.

Clients were addressing a range of challenges including engaging and influencing internal and external stakeholders; joint venture partnerships; co-innovation; culture and institutional barriers to change; sustainable supply chain management; business diversification; policy and market uncertainty; low carbon product development and high vs low value add.

All the studies used the Thinking Systems approach and are supported by rigorous scientific research such as complexity analysis, benchmarking, social impact assesment and/or discussion papers.

Developing low carbon products from industrial waste
The following three supply chain studies used the Thinking Systems approach to explore the challenges of developing low high and low value products from waste, ash and loss of ignition char from the burning of brown coal for electricity.

Biochar from coal and biomass
The process and opportunities of developing energy from gas and soil amendments from biochar were explored using a range of biomass feedstock and ‘loss of ignition’ char from brown coal. Over 15 companies were involved in the study, key participants were Victorian power stations, TRUenergy, ADAA. Sustainability Victoria and NSW DII.

Road base from ash dams
Victorian power stations store over 1 million tones of ash every year in ash dams.  This is both expensive to store and a waste of a valuable resource.  This study explores a range of options for utilizing power station ash in road base applications, barriers and ways to move forward.

High value add products from slag
Compares slag to natural quarried materials and reviews low carbon product development opportunities from slag (EAFS) produced at the One Steel and Harsco site in Victoria.

Property developers' procurement challenges
Low carbon concrete
The challenges the property developers had was procuring more low carbon products for their buildings. This study discusses developing procurement policies when dealing with a complex, product with multiple stakeholders and material options.
Key participants Bovis Lend Lease, Stockland and Landcom, Macquarie University and Australian Commonwealth and State government agencies.

Food sector transport options
Using light weight hybrid trucks for bread distribution
Reviews the options for daily transport of bread in urban areas.  Explores a range of transport options and developing a light weight hybrid vehicle fleet.
Key participants: Goodman Fielder, Orix, Macquarie University and Australian Commonwealth and State government agencies.
